In North America, October belongs to New Mexico's skies. For nine days, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta turns the Rio Grande Valley into the setting for the world's largest hot-air balloon festival, with the crowd-pleasing Special Shape Rodeo sending balloons shaped like animals, rockets and spacemen aloft at dawn. Texas counterpoints with Austin City Limits at Zilker Park, which draws more than 400,000 people for everything from blues to hip-hop, plus a food line-up featuring Texan institutions like Scholz Garten.
Canada goes wilder.
