Batam is about to get its biggest shake-up in years. Opus Bay, a 125-hectare waterfront development on the island's west coast, starts opening in phases from December 2026, and it arrives with a perk few resorts anywhere can claim: its own ferry terminal.
Developed by Singapore-based Tuan Sing Holdings since 2021, Opus Bay is being billed as Indonesia's first fully integrated township — accommodation, retail, dining and sport all in one spot. For Singaporeans used to hopping over for cheap seafood and spa days, that means no more long taxi rides from the main ferry terminal. The new Marina Bay Ferry Cove is served by a roughly 45-minute sailing from Singapore Cruise Centre, and from dock to hotel door is a three-minute walk.
The first phase includes Residence on Opus Bay, which pairs two very different places to stay. The 35-storey Balmoral Tower will be Batam's largest hotel, with 493 rooms spanning deluxe studios up to two-bedroom suites — solid news for families who usually struggle for space on this island. If you'd rather have privacy, the Cluny Resort section adds 57 private villas across seven categories, some with up to three bedrooms, aimed at bigger groups who still want that tucked-away feel.
Early 2027 brings the rest of the lineup. Bay Boulevard Marina Promenade is a 10,000sqm waterfront strip with close to 80 retail and dining outlets, plus a food hall and supermarket — handy, given Batam's main malls are a 30-minute drive away. The Sports Park, a five-minute walk from the hotel, will have three padel courts (one competition-standard) and four pickleball courts, open to the public with a food kiosk on site.
Why it matters: Batam has long been the quick-and-cheap escape for Singaporeans, but the experience has often meant piecing together ferries, taxis and scattered hotels. Opus Bay compresses all of that into one walkable site, which could change how people plan short breaks to the island — arrive by ferry, check in, and not leave until the return sailing. It also makes Batam more viable for families and groups who want villas and facilities rather than a basic city hotel.
The rollout is staggered, so expect the ferry terminal and hotel first from December 2026, with shopping and sports facilities following in early 2027. If a Batam trip is on your list for the year-end holidays, this is the new opening to watch.
