Portimão's riverside turns pink on Sunday, October 25, when the Caminhada Outubro Rosa charity walk sets off in support of breast cancer awareness. It's a non-competitive event open to all ages, with two route options along the Arade waterfront — 5km or 8km — so you can pick your distance on the morning.

The logistics are simple. Everyone meets near the Antiga Lota, the former fish market on the riverside. Registration and kit collection run from 8.30am to 9.15am, there's a group warm-up at 9.30am, and the walk itself starts at 10am.

Taking part is free, but you need to sign up in advance through the BOL ticketing platform. There are two options: register for nothing and just show up, or pay €5 for a charity kit that gets you a T-shirt, a piece of fruit and a bottle of water. If you'd rather support the cause without walking, kits can be bought directly from the Portuguese Cancer League's Faro Support Group. Note that personal details are required at registration because the event includes accident insurance.

The walk is organised by the Faro Support Group of the Portuguese Cancer League's Southern Regional Branch, backed by Portimão Council, and forms part of the Algarve's 2026/2027 Regional Walking and Running Calendar, promoted by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth. Money raised goes towards the League's work supporting cancer patients and their families.

For travellers, this is a nice excuse to be in the Algarve outside peak season. Late October in Portimão means milder temperatures, far fewer crowds and hotel prices well below the summer highs. The riverside area where the walk takes place is the town's pleasant side — a promenade lined with cafes and restaurants, close to the old town and a short trip from the famous beaches of Praia da Rocha. You could pair the morning walk with a lazy seafood lunch by the water and an afternoon exploring Alvor, a few kilometres west.

Even if you can't make the date, the event signals something useful: the Algarve has an active calendar of organised walks and runs through autumn and winter, and these events are a low-cost way to see the region on foot while meeting locals. Keep an eye on the regional calendar if you're planning an off-season Algarve trip.

The deeper message behind the event matters too. Organisers are using the walk to push the point that early detection of breast cancer saves lives, and the relaxed, family-friendly format is designed to get as many people as possible involved — visitors included. If you're in the area that weekend, lacing up your shoes for a couple of riverside kilometres is an easy way to stretch your legs and contribute.

Plan around the timings: arrive in time for the 8.30–9.15am registration window, bring comfortable shoes, and decide whether you want the €5 kit before you register online, as kits can also be collected in advance at locations including the municipal sports pavilion in Portimão and the sports complexes in Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande.
