Malaysian neighbourhood grocer Segi Fresh marked its 32nd anniversary by doing something new: opening two stores at once. On 31 October 2026, the brand launched Fresh Mart outlets at Pusat Bandar and Taman Nilam in Tanjung Karang, a coastal district in Selangor about an hour north of Kuala Lumpur. That brings its count in the district to three, and it's the first time the company has opened two outlets in the same district simultaneously.
The move signals a shift in how the retailer grows. Instead of scattering stores widely, Segi Fresh is trying a "district cluster" approach — concentrating outlets within one area so more households are within easy reach of fresh produce. Co-founder and CEO Chia Ah Keong framed it as a focus on accessibility, freshness and value rather than simply racking up store numbers.
Both stores stock the usual Fresh Mart range: vegetables, fruit, poultry, meat, seafood, groceries and household basics. They also carry the company's refreshed branding and next-generation store design, which debuted at its Bidor outlet in Perak back in September. Founded as a wholesale business in 1994 — with roots in traditional markets stretching back to 1984 under founder Dato' Chui Ah Hock — Segi Fresh now positions itself around a stated goal of becoming Malaysia's top fresh mart chain.
If you happen to be in the area, there are reasons to stop by beyond groceries. The openings tie into the "32 Tahun Legasi" anniversary campaign, with promotions on selected fresh products and daily essentials running from 30 October to 12 November 2026. A bigger incentive is the "Top 1 Beli & Menang" lucky draw, live until 31 December 2026, with a Perodua Alza MPV, motorcycles and shopping vouchers among the prizes — eligibility and entry conditions apply. New stores are also offering member rewards, free product redemptions, RM5 return-visit vouchers and a "Kumpul & Tebus" collect-and-redeem programme, while the Taman Nilam branch adds food sampling, mascot appearances and balloon giveaways for families with kids.
Why should travellers care? Tanjung Karang itself is a low-key rice-belt town popular with day-trippers headed to nearby Kuala Selangor for firefly river cruises and seafood. Having a modern, well-stocked supermarket in the district makes self-catering or road-trip provisioning easier if you're exploring rural Selangor by car. And while a supermarket opening is modest news in the grand scheme, it's a good snapshot of how Malaysian neighbourhood retail is consolidating and modernising — useful context if you like seeing how locals actually shop, rather than only tourist-facing markets.
The practical takeaway: if you're driving the Kuala Selangor coast in the next couple of months, timing a grocery stop with the anniversary promotions or the end-of-year lucky draw adds a little extra value to the trip. And if you pass a Segi Fresh elsewhere in Malaysia — Bidor, for instance, along the common northbound route toward Ipoh — the chain's newer store format is worth a look for cheap, fresh local produce.
