Three new MRT stations will open in eastern Singapore on 26 December 2026, completing the Thomson-East Coast Line and extending the Downtown Line. The Land Transport Authority confirmed the date on 4 November 2026: Bedok South and Sungei Bedok on the TEL, plus Xilin on the DTL, filling the long-standing gap between Bayshore and Expo.

The time savings are the headline act. A trip from Havelock to Changi, currently a slog of about 75 minutes with a bus transfer, drops to roughly 45 minutes on a single line. Commuters from Marine Terrace heading to Expo can shave up to 15 minutes by switching onto the Downtown Line, while shoppers can ride direct from Tampines to Marine Parade in a bit over half an hour — a welcome alternative to the usual Tampines Mall circuit.

The wider impact is substantial. Once the lines are complete, more than 240,000 households will sit within a 10-minute walk of a TEL station, and around 220,000 will be that close to a DTL station. For a city where the last few hundred metres from the train often mean a sweaty bus hop, that's a real quality-of-life shift.

Each new station unlocks something practical. Sungei Bedok puts the popular Bedok Food Centre practically at the platform edge, and also serves those reporting to or from Bedok Camp. Bedok South neighbours Siglap Community Club, which packs in a bowling alley, badminton courts, a food court and a McDonald's. Xilin, meanwhile, makes Changi Business Park far easier to reach — along with Changi City Point and its factory outlets, a reliable spot for discounted brand shopping.

Why should travellers care? Getting to Singapore's east has long been the awkward part of a visit, whether you're chasing hawker food, factory outlets, or the East Coast Park stretch. From December, the whole eastern corridor links directly north to Woodlands, meaning the run to the Johor Bahru checkpoint — a favourite quick escape for locals — gets noticeably simpler too. If your trip combines the city with a side excursion into Malaysia by land, this news will matter more than it first appears.

The stations open simultaneously on 26 December 2026 as TEL Stage 5 and the Downtown Line Stage 3 Extension.
