Southwest Airlines has made a rare mid-cycle change to its published schedule, trimming or suspending ten nonstop routes in the first quarter of 2027. Network analysts spotted the shift in the latest OAG and Cirium Diio filings, and the pattern points to two pressures: weak February demand and high fuel prices.

The cuts fall into two clusters. Seven of the ten routes involve either Hawaii or San Diego, where Southwest faces stiffening competition from Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian. The deepest reductions hit the short inter-island hops between Kahului (Maui) and both Kona and Lihue. Those flights now stop on January 5, roughly two months earlier than planned, and with nothing scheduled for the rest of the year, both routes appear to be ending entirely. The Kahului–Kona link, at just 73 nautical miles, was Southwest's third-shortest route anywhere — and it showed. In the year to July 2026 it carried about 64,000 round-trip passengers with only half its seats filled, while Hawaiian's 717s ran three times daily on the same pair.

Elsewhere, several newer routes are being scaled back hard. Las Vegas to Hilo, only launched in August 2026 as the first-ever nonstop between the two cities, drops from up to daily to just two weekly flights after a February gap. Omaha to New York LaGuardia, a 2026 launch, will now run only January 1–5 and then disappear. Pittsburgh to San Diego ends January 4 but at least returns in June. Routes like Columbus–San Diego and Omaha–San Diego skip February entirely before resuming in mid-March.

February is typically among the worst months of the year for US carriers, so plugging that gap saves money — and with fuel prices elevated, marginal routes are the first to go. Worth noting: four of the affected routes only started in 2024 or 2026, a reminder that airline route launches are often trial balloons that can be yanked quickly.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is to book Southwest's newer or thinner routes with caution. If you were counting on that overnight Hilo–Las Vegas red-eye (which lands at Harry Reid around 5:00 AM and remains, for now, one of five overnight Hawaii–Vegas flights on the airline), check the schedule for your specific dates before planning around it. And if you need to hop between Maui, Kona, or Lihue after early January 2027, Hawaiian and Southern Airways Express will be your options.

Anyone holding bookings on affected routes should watch for schedule-change notices from Southwest, which typically rebook or refund automatically.
