Southwest Airlines is giving its Rapid Rewards program its biggest shake-up in years, and the timing matters for anyone who uses the carrier to reach the Caribbean. New routes to Aruba, Jamaica, St. Thomas and Punta Cana are expanding the airline's island network just as the loyalty program changes shape, starting January 1, 2027.
The familiar A-List and A-List Preferred labels disappear. In their place: Silver (the old A-List), Gold (A-List Preferred) and a new top tier called Platinum. Platinum members get unlimited Companion Pass trips, while existing Companion Pass holders keep their benefits until their current pass expires.
The more interesting news for occasional flyers is Milestone Rewards. You no longer have to hit a status tier to pick up perks — early milestones let you choose between extra Rapid Rewards points or seat certificates. And there's a new milestone between Gold and Platinum that hands you three Companion Pass trips, each usable for a one-way or round-trip journey. For couples plotting a shared beach holiday, that's a genuine way to bring a partner along without holding the full pass.
Credit card spending now counts toward status, too. From January, every Southwest Rapid Rewards card issued by Chase — including the Plus — earns one Tier Qualifying Point per dollar on qualifying purchases. Note the distinction: those are different from the redeemable points in your balance, and only the former move you up the tiers. Book a couple of domestic flights and a St. Maarten trip, and your everyday card spending fills in the gaps between departures.
Points are becoming more flexible as well. From November 2026 you can redeem them for rental cars through Southwest's booking platform, and later in 2027 for seat selection — including Preferred and Extra Legroom seats — on flights you've already booked. Spring 2027 brings earning and redemption partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad, stretching your points beyond Southwest's own map.
Two bigger-ticket additions are coming. Late 2027 sees the launch of the Icon Lounge network, built with Chase and accessible via a new premium Southwest credit card due that year — a notable shift for an airline that has never operated lounges. And Southwest expects to finish installing Starlink across its fleet by fall 2027, with free WiFi for Rapid Rewards members through the T-Mobile partnership.
Some things don't change: points still don't expire, and flight redemptions still carry no blackout dates. If Southwest is your bridge between the mainland and the islands, 2027 gives you more routes to status, more ways to spend what you've earned, and — eventually — somewhere comfortable to wait for boarding.
