What began as a roadside fruit stand is now a full family day out — you can pick your own apples from more than a dozen varieties, then move on to a corn maze in the 'Back 40' area complete with slides, a zip line, a straw mountain, apple cannons, wagon rides, a cow train and a petting barn. It operates seasonally from around August to October, when the fruit ripens. Elsewhere, Klenk Orchards does apple and cherry picking, and Steffans Orchards & Market pairs its orchard with a pumpkin patch.
Timing matters. September is peak season and usually when Sparta hosts Michigan Apple Fest, a town-wide celebration with kids' activities, live music, trolley rides, line dancing and — crucially — an apple pie contest. Earlier in the year, Town & Country Days brings a carnival, car show and parade to downtown in May, and August brings the Sparta Celtic Festival with Highland games.
The village itself is small but pleasant for a half-day wander. Downtown has independent shops like Blondie Blossom Boutique and Creekside Clover, plus local eating spots including Angela's Italian Restaurant and Downtown Trini's & Margarita Joe's, all arranged around a town square that hosts markets and events through the year.
If the weather holds, there's plenty of outdoor space beyond the orchards. Long Lake Park is good for lakeside picnics and swimming, the Sparta Nature Trail covers more than 100 acres of birding and wildlife spotting, and Spartan Park has skate facilities plus a playground for younger kids.
