At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, a resort in Dhaalu Atoll, the main attraction isn't really on the island at all — it's everything just offshore and a boat ride away. The resort has lined up a marine programme that stretches from its own house reef out to Faafu, Meemu and South Ari Atolls, covering everything from nervous first-time snorkellers to certified divers.

The headline excursion heads to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where guided snorkelling trips go in search of whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — with manta ray encounters possible in the same waters when conditions line up. Full-day trips across Meemu and Faafu Atolls mix open-water sightings with quiet lagoons, coral reefs and stops at uninhabited islands. Around Makunueri, snorkellers regularly cross paths with turtles, reef sharks and rays. There are also private charters for guests who want the reefs to themselves, some doubling as gentle introductions to scuba.

Back on the island, the house reef gets two very different showings. By day, guided snorkels explore the coral formations and resident marine life right off the beach. After dark, the same reef transforms: guided night snorkels use fluorescent and blue lights to reveal nocturnal species, including nurse sharks.

If that all sounds too serious, the resort runs an SSI Mermaid programme — literally a mermaid tail and lessons in swimming with it, plus underwater photos and video to prove it happened. Guests who want to give something back can join the coral planting initiative on the house reef, and a weekly Marine Night talk covers reef conservation and local marine life.

The resort's SSI-certified dive centre rounds things out. Experienced divers can head out to surrounding dive sites with the in-house team, while complete beginners can try an introductory scuba session — or use the stay to earn a full SSI certification.

For travellers, the appeal is flexibility. You don't need to be a diver to have a memorable ocean week here; the programme is built so a family might combine a turtle snorkel, a mermaid lesson and a night swim with blue lights, while a diving partner logs deeper sites across three atolls. It's also a decent pick for anyone who wants their holiday to leave a mark — the coral planting gives guests a small, tangible stake in the reef they swam on.
