Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport has officially opened, with Jetstar flying the first commercial passenger flight to the Gold Coast and Air New Zealand arriving from Auckland a day later. Singapore Airlines, Vietjet, Fiji Airways and Qatar Airways will join through 2027. Australia's first major new airport in 50 years is up and running — but there's a catch for anyone booking an early flight.

The airport itself has no hotel yet. The planned Courtyard by Marriott collapsed with its builder, leaving a widely reported shortage of rooms within 20 kilometres of the terminal. Add a trip from central Sydney that runs about 50 minutes by car or nearly two hours on public transport, and staying somewhere close-ish starts to make a lot of sense. The good news: western Sydney's hotel stock is quietly having a moment.

Closest to the action, Atura Oran Park opens October 30 on the old Oran Park Raceway site — 184 rooms, motorsport design touches, an Italian restaurant called Tavola, and roughly 20 minutes to the terminal. It's billed as the nearest four-star to the airport and the first hotel from the Perich family.

Penrith, out west, now has two strong options. The new Pullman Sydney Penrith is a 152-room five-star with a striking glass facade, a "Sleep Therapy Menu" for pillow obsessives, and a free Flight Recovery Kit (chamomile tea, caramel fudge, sleep mask) if you flash a boarding pass at check-in. Cheaper and arguably more fun, Astina Suites Penrith has apartment-style rooms, a rooftop infinity pool at Theo's Rooftop Bar, and a recovery studio with sauna and ice baths — 22 to 25 minutes from the airport.

For food-first travellers, the Novotel in Canley Vale puts you on the doorstep of Cabramatta, Sydney's "Little Saigon", where the Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian and regional Chinese eating is some of the best in the country. The hotel sits within the $230 million Cabravale Club Resort redevelopment and even has its own fire-powered restaurant, Magma by Dany Karam. Alternatively, The William Inglis Hotel at Warwick Farm is a racing-themed MGallery property with a heated rooftop pool overlooking the thoroughbreds and paddock-to-plate steak downstairs. Parramatta's One Global Resorts, a rebranded Skye Suites in the V by Crown "vertical village", rounds things out with a 25-metre pool, sauna and steps-from-the-station location about 40 minutes away.

Why it matters: until an airport hotel eventually materialises, anyone with a dawn departure or late arrival out west is better off staying nearby than battling across the city. These six picks turn an overnight necessity into a proper stay — with racecourses, rooftop pools and a legendary food precinct thrown in.
