Skyscrapers are great for skylines and terrible for sunsets — unless you know exactly where to stand. A new study from Popsa, an AI-powered photo printing service, crunched the location metadata of millions of sunset photos uploaded in 2025 (no humans eyeballing the shots, just the GPS data baked into each image) to rank where New York City's best golden-hour moments actually happen.
The results lean heavily on height and water. Topping the list is SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, where the mirrored floors and ceilings of the 91st-floor Transcendence installation multiply the golden light into something close to infinite. Rockefeller Center's Top of the Rock follows, with an open-air deck serving 360-degree views that take in both the Empire State Building and Central Park at their most flattering.
Waterfront spots do surprisingly well. Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre stretch along the East River, frames Lower Manhattan's skyline just as millions of office windows catch the last light. The Brooklyn Bridge itself makes the list too — the classic walk across is even better timed to golden hour.
Vertical thrills feature prominently. Edge NYC lets you stand on a triangular glass platform jutting from the 100th floor (or clip in for the City Climb if you fancy leaning over the edge). The Empire State Building offers sunset slots on its 86th-floor open-air deck, while One World Trade Center counters with a 360-degree indoor observatory on floor 102.
Ground level gets some love as well. Central Park's nearly 900 acres hide plenty of sunset-friendly corners, from Bow Bridge to Bethesda Terrace. On the west side, the High Line's elevated path between the Meatpacking District and 34th Street faces the fading New Jersey horizon, with the honeycomb-shaped Vessel at Hudson Yards making a natural photo stop along the way.
Why does this matter if you're planning a New York trip? Sunset photography here is genuinely tricky — the city's towers block low horizons, and even big parks like Central Park and Prospect Park lack wide-open sky views. This list solves that by pointing you to proven vantage points, several of which sell timed tickets. If a sunset slot at SUMMIT, Top of the Rock, or the Edge is on your list, book ahead and aim to arrive shortly before the sun starts dropping. Most of these pair neatly with a dusk cocktail or a river walk afterwards, and the free options — the bridge, the parks, the High Line — cost nothing but good timing.
