Skytrax has announced its 2026 World Airline Awards, based on its annual passenger satisfaction survey, and the honours for lounges have been handed out.
Taking the top spot as the world's best independent airport lounge is the Chase Sapphire Lounge at New York LaGuardia. It's a two-storey space with a seasonal menu built around local bites, a craft cocktail bar called Apotheke, and — unusually for an airport lounge — complimentary 30-minute facial treatments you can book via QR code.
Rome Fiumicino's Plaza Premium Lounge came second, with the Chase Sapphire Lounge at Hong Kong close behind in third. The rest of the top ten is an airport-hopper's who's who: Capital One and the Amex Centurion Lounge at New York JFK, the Coral Cosmo Lounge at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, plus three Middle Eastern entries — The Pearl in Bahrain, the Primeclass Lounge in Muscat, and Plaza Premium in Dubai.
The UK manages a single representative: Plaza Premium in Heathrow Terminal 4, ranked fourth in the world. It offers a complimentary buffet, self-serve beer, wine, spirits, juices and coffee, plus a quiet zone and showers — handy if you're coming off a long-haul or heading into one. Notably, it's one of the lounges you can pay to enter regardless of which airline you're flying, which matters at Heathrow where premium lounges are otherwise tied to status or ticket class.
There was an organisational winner too: Plaza Premium Group took the title of world's best airport lounge group for the tenth consecutive year, ahead of TAV Primeclass and Chase Sapphire Lounges. Founder and CEO Song Hoi See framed the streak as validation of the independent lounge model his company helped invent 28 years ago — spaces open to any paying traveller, not just premium cabin passengers.
Why does this list matter to a regular traveller? Because independent lounges have quietly become one of the best-value upgrades in air travel. Entry can often be bought for roughly the price of a restaurant meal, via lounge access apps, pay-at-the-door schemes or credit card perks tied to brands like Chase, Capital One and Amex — three of which appear in this top ten. If you're facing a long connection at LaGuardia, JFK, Fiumicino, Bangkok or Dubai, the survey gives you a solid shortlist of where to spend a few hours before boarding.
The Skytrax awards themselves carry weight because they're drawn from a global survey of travellers rather than a judging panel, so the rankings reflect what actual passengers valued: comfort, food and drink, facilities and service. The full lounge group ranking also flags names worth watching at other airports, including Aspire, Escape and Araya lounges.
