This year the holiday is set for Wednesday December 2 and Thursday December 3. On paper that's a mid-week pair of days off rather than a long weekend — but don't lock in plans just yet. Under UAE Cabinet rules, eligible holidays can be shifted to the start or end of the week by official decision, and National Day qualifies for that treatment. So residents and visitors alike will need to wait for a Cabinet announcement to see whether this turns into a four-day run.
If it does, it's a solid window for a getaway — or for staying put. National Day is celebrated across all seven emirates with cultural performances, fireworks and large-scale festivities, so the cities get busy (and festive) fast. Abu Dhabi and Dubai typically put on the biggest shows, while smaller emirates offer a slightly calmer version of the celebrations.
Already thinking about next year? The 2027 calendar is taking shape, with one big caveat: only New Year's Day and National Day have fixed Gregorian dates. Everything else follows the Hijri calendar, so dates depend on moon sightings and will only be confirmed closer to the time. On the expected list: New Year's Day on Friday January 1; Eid Al Fitr around Wednesday March 10 to Friday March 12, with a possible extra day depending on whether Ramadan runs 29 or 30 days; then a likely four-day stretch from Arafat Day on Saturday May 15 through Eid Al Adha, ending Tuesday May 18. Islamic New Year is expected around June 6-7, the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday around Monday August 16, and National Day lands on Thursday December 2 and Friday December 3 — meaning a probable four-day break once the weekend is added.
Why does this matter for travellers? If you're heading to the UAE around any of these dates, expect higher demand, busier attractions and pricier flights — or, alternatively, a great excuse to join some genuinely spectacular national celebrations. And if you're based in the UAE, the May cluster in 2027 is shaping up to be the sweet spot for a short-haul escape, with four consecutive days off predicted.
