United Airlines is overhauling how its MileagePlus members earn Premier status, and the headline change is simple: from 2027, flight segments no longer count. Status will be earned purely through Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) — which you rack up by spending money with United and on its cobranded credit cards.

Until now, flyers had two routes to Premier status: hit a PQP threshold on spending alone, or combine a lower PQP total with a set number of Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs). That second path disappears for 2027 qualification. Silver stays at 6,000 PQPs, Gold at 12,000 and Platinum at 18,000 — but top-tier 1K jumps from 28,000 to 32,000 PQPs, a 14% hike. For flyers who previously used the flights-plus-spending combo to reach 1K, the effective increase is closer to 45%.

United's loyalty chief Jarad Fisher told The Points Guy the move was about simplification — one consistent metric tied to how much members invest in the airline. In practice, it hits a specific group hardest: frequent flyers who log lots of short-haul segments. Anyone who used to qualify via cheap regional hops will now need to spend meaningfully more, and United's own suggestion is that a cobranded card is the way to bridge the gap.

There are a few silver linings. The old end-of-year "segment run" — criss-crossing the country on cheap hops to top up qualifying flights — is officially dead, and United says that's the point. The baseline requirement of four United flights per year remains (partner flights don't count, though United Express does). And cardholders get a 5% head start each year: depending on your status level, United will deposit between 300 and 1,600 PQPs into your account at the start of 2027 — with the bonus applying to anyone who opens an eligible card by the end of 2026.

On the earning side, you get 1 PQP per $1 spent on United flights, and the cards earn at varying rates: the Explorer Card (1 PQP per $20, capped at 1,000 a year), the Quest Card (1 per $20, capped at 18,000) and the Club Card (1 per $15, capped at 32,000). Certain upgrades and extras earn PQPs too, as do partner flights booked through United on 016 stock.

This is United's second big loyalty shake-up of 2026, following an earlier overhaul of how miles are earned and redeemed. It also brings the airline in line with rivals: American and Delta have based status purely on spending for years. If your status strategy revolves around United, now's the time to work out whether your 2027 plan relies on segments — because those days are numbered.
