Việt Nam wants to put its countryside on the tourism map in a bigger way. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has kicked off a national contest to name Việt Nam's Best Rural Tourist Destination 2026, running alongside the Culture, Sports and Tourism Ministry under a joint programme to promote sustainable agricultural and rural tourism through 2030.
The idea goes beyond handing out trophies. Organisers want the winning award to become a recognisable brand, build a network where destinations swap know-how, and eventually plug Việt Nam's rural tourism spots into international rural tourism networks. Officials also hope standout models will be copied elsewhere, creating extra income streams for villagers and making rural areas more attractive places to live.
So what makes a destination eligible? Entries must sit within a clearly defined area of a commune-level administrative unit, have distinctive rural tourism resources, an established management body and genuine community participation. Think craft villages, agricultural experiences, ecological scenery and cultural heritage, backed by solid service quality and a fair share of tourism benefits going to locals.
Judging works on four fronts: the distinctiveness of the tourism products, community values and benefits, sustainable development with risk management, and promotion plus digital transformation. Scoring combines the panel's review of paperwork and on-site visits with public votes cast through an app and social media — so travellers get a say too.
There are two titles up for grabs. A judging panel will pick five winners in the 'Best Rural Tourism Destination' category, while three destinations take the 'People's Choice' crown based purely on public votes. Winners receive certificates, trophies and cash prizes.
The mechanics are tight: each province or centrally run city can nominate a maximum of two destinations, with local agriculture and tourism departments shepherding the process. Entries close on October 15, with judging and public voting wrapped up by November 30. The awards will be handed out during the opening of the 2026 Việt Nam OCOP Festival in Hồ Chí Minh City, running December 3 to 6 — OCOP being the country's 'One Commune One Product' programme, which gives the ceremony a fitting agricultural backdrop.
For travellers, this is worth watching even if you never look at a single shortlist. The contest signals where Việt Nam is steering its rural tourism push, and the nominated destinations — chosen by provinces as their very best — form a ready-made shortlist of places promising authentic craft villages, farm experiences and community-run stays without the crowds of Hạ Long Bay or Hội An. If you've been tempted by the Mekong Delta's waterways, the terraced north or the central highlands' coffee country, the eventual winners and People's Choice picks will be an easy way to find spots that are well managed and genuinely give back to the communities hosting you.
Public voting means you can even influence the outcome: once the shortlist is live, votes come through an official application and selected social media platforms. Either way, expect the winners to get a tourism bump — and a good excuse to plan a countryside detour on your next Việt Nam trip.
