Zagreb has picked up a notable bragging right for the colder months: Time Out has named the Croatian capital Europe's best winter destination for families in its 2026 ranking of European winter city breaks.

The honour rests largely on Advent in Zagreb, the city's long-running festive programme that has collected its own awards over the years. From late November through the holiday season, the centre fills with Christmas markets, street performances, traditional music and elaborate light displays, all compact enough to walk between with children in tow. The programme also includes the annual Advent Run, plus a winter cultural calendar spanning exhibitions, theatre and concerts.

What makes the recognition interesting is the framing. Croatia trades almost entirely on its Adriatic summer image — Dubrovnik, Split and the islands hog the attention from June to September. Time Out's point is that the capital flips that script: in winter, Zagreb is the main event, offering a version of the country most coastal-focused visitors never see.

The wider Time Out list spreads the love across 11 European cities with different winter angles. Paris took the couples' category, Edinburgh was picked for food lovers, and neighbouring Ljubljana was named the most underrated winter pick, thanks partly to its distinctive Christmas light installations. Sarajevo earned a mention as a different kind of winter break, pairing cultural heritage and traditional coffee culture with easy access to ski slopes. The full selection also includes Amsterdam, Tallinn, Tromsø, Antwerp, Innsbruck and Reykjavik.

For families plotting a festive getaway, Zagreb's appeal is practical as much as it is pretty. The Advent programme is free to wander, the historic upper town and main square concentrate the action in a walkable area, and the city's café culture gives everyone a warm-up stop every hour or so. It also pairs neatly with Ljubljana — a three-hour-ish trip — if you want to tick off two of the list's winners in one trip.

Budget-wise, Croatia's capital undercuts most of western Europe's festive heavyweights, and flights from the UK and much of Europe are short and often cheap in December. If you have been meaning to see Croatia beyond the beach, the colder months now come with a genuine recommendation attached.
