Vacation is meant to be a break from housework, yet Airbnb guests have long found themselves stripping beds, washing dishes, and hauling rubbish off-site — sometimes after paying a hefty cleaning fee. Now, 18 years after the platform launched, that's finally being addressed.
Airbnb's updated policy, called 'Reasonable house rules and requests', takes effect for all reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026. Under the new rules, hosts can no longer ask guests to carry out certain checkout tasks — the big two being off-site garbage disposal and dishwashing. Airbnb's own guidance to hosts puts it bluntly: asking guests to do things a cleaner should handle can hurt both their stay and your reviews.
The frustration is well documented. Guests online have complained about being handed chore lists on departure mornings despite coughing up cleaning fees — one recounted paying $255 only to be asked to strip beds, pile towels in the bathtub, and remove all rubbish from the property. Others said the dread of checkout chores pushed them to cancel Airbnb bookings entirely and book hotels instead.
The new rules aren't a total free pass, though. Hosts can still reasonably ask guests to pop dishes in the sink and separate trash from recycling. And there's more in it for guests than chore relief: the policy also requires transparent pricing, meaning fees for advertised amenities must be baked into the final price shown at booking — no more surprise add-ons at checkout.
Not everyone is celebrating. Some hosts and guests on Reddit worry the rules go too far, particularly for long stays where a guest who never does any cleaning could leave a property in poor shape. Others argue support disputes between hosts and guests could get messier as a result. Many guests, for their part, say they're happy to tidy up after themselves and understand hosts' point of view. The policy's real-world effects will only become clear once it kicks in.
Why does this matter to travellers? If you've ever skipped Airbnb in favour of a hotel because you resent paying a cleaning fee and then cleaning anyway, this change directly targets that pain point. From late November 2026, any booking you make should come with lighter checkout expectations and an all-in price up front. It's worth remembering the rules only apply to reservations booked on or after the November 20, 2026 cut-off, so chore-heavy listings could still linger for existing-style bookings made before then — always read a listing's house rules before committing.
