Forty-five minutes by ferry from Singapore, Batam spent years as a quick-hit destination: a seafood lunch, a massage, some shopping, then back on the boat. That script is being rewritten. A new ferry terminal beside Singapore's HarbourFront Centre opened in July 2026 with self-service check-in kiosks and automated baggage handling, serving routes to Batam Centre, Harbour Bay and Sekupang. (Nongsa-bound travellers still leave from Tanah Merah to Nongsapura.) And on the island itself, a wave of resorts, wellness retreats and independent eateries has given visitors reasons to stay longer than an afternoon.

The anchor remains Montigo Resorts Nongsa, the 2012 opener whose whitewashed villas cascade down a hillside above the Singapore Strait. All its rooms, from studios to five-bedroom villas, come with private pools, and three-villa private compounds let groups share a communal pool and dining area while keeping their own space. Staff can set up alfresco dinners under string lights, and the food offering now spans Indonesian classics at Warung Montigo, Chinese and seafood at Pantai, and Japanese izakaya plates at Hinotori. There's tennis, padel and air-conditioned spa huts if you need structure to your lounging.

Bigger things are coming. Opus Bay, a self-contained waterfront quarter with its own ferry terminal from Singapore, welcomes its first guests in December 2026. Phase one is Balmoral Tower, 35 storeys and 493 rooms - the developer calls it Batam's largest hotel - with studios to two-bedroom suites, kitchenettes and an AI-powered digital concierge. More facilities follow in 2027.

If you'd rather go inward than upward, Sidjih Wellness Village at Batam View Beach Resort soft-opened in February 2026 with seven garden spa villas fitted with hot tubs and rain showers. Beyond massages, it runs yoga, sound healing, fitness sessions and cooking classes using produce from its organic farm, plus multi-day retreat programmes. City types have a new base too: the 168-room Grand Swiss-Belhotel Harbour Bay, opened April 2026 around an indoor garden atrium, sits a short walk from the ferry terminal, Bayfront Mall and the waterfront promenade.

The food scene is quietly levelling up as well. Melawa Paragon Hill, opened in April 2026, showcases traditional Riau Malay cooking with communal makan berhidang spreads. Baseline House at TAO Padel pairs courtside views with brunch - padel has officially landed. Garam & Madu does sourdough Neapolitan-style pizza and pasta in a tiny reservation-only room, and Sreg Coffee Roasters in Baloi Permai brews Indonesian beans with serious credentials: its barista Andika Pratama won the 2022 Indonesia AeroPress Championship.

Why it matters: Batam is one of the easiest international escapes from Singapore, and 2026 has given it enough new places to sleep, eat and unwind to justify an overnight stay - or a whole weekend - rather than a day trip. Families and groups should look at Montigo's villas, shoppers and city-lovers at Harbour Bay, and wellness seekers at Sidjih.
