The leaves are turning, the cafés are filling up, and one Belgian city has just been crowned the snuggest place in Europe for an autumn break.
A new study by UK holiday home letting agency Big House Experience scanned Reddit discussions about continental European cities (UK destinations excluded) and ranked them by upvotes. Bruges came out comfortably on top with more than 15,000 upvotes — no shock to anyone who has wandered its cobblestone lanes, medieval buildings and canal-side chocolate shops. The advice from fans is simple: stroll the winding old streets, then duck into an eatery for a thick Belgian hot chocolate.
Amsterdam follows just behind on 14,477 upvotes. The Dutch capital's tree-lined canals put on a proper autumn show of red and orange, and the colder months bring out the heartier menus. If you go, try poffertjes — hot mini pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar.
Prague (11,098) and Kraków (10,117) complete the top four, both trading on atmospheric old towns full of places to warm up between sights.
The interesting twist comes further down the list. Athens took fifth place with 9,243 upvotes, proof that cosy doesn't have to mean cold — sun-drenched streets, traditional tavernas and tucked-away neighbourhood cafés deliver the same snug feeling in far milder weather. Lisbon (3,243) makes the same argument, with tiled façades, rattling historic trams, wine bars and gentle autumn temperatures.
Back in chillier territory, Copenhagen (2,850) leans into hygge, the Danish art of warm, comfortable, inviting spaces — which is arguably the whole point of an autumn city break anyway. Salzburg (2,397) adds crisp air and mountain views to its classic coffee houses, while Utrecht (1,040) rounds out the list as a quieter, canal-laced alternative to Amsterdam with independent cafés and historic streets.
Full ranking: Bruges, Amsterdam, Prague, Kraków, Athens, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Salzburg, Utrecht.
Why it matters: if you want the cosiest possible October or November trip, the crowd has spoken — low-season crowds, glowing café interiors and streets built for wandering. Pick Bruges or Prague for the full misty-medieval effect, Copenhagen or Salzburg for proper winter-adjacent chill, or Athens and Lisbon if you'd rather feel snug without freezing. Utrecht is worth a look for anyone who loves Amsterdam but not its crowds.
