Cruise passengers bound for Cairns are learning that tide tables and channel dredging can reshape a holiday. Carnival Encounter has become the third ship this month to have its itinerary altered because of shallow depths in the Cairns shipping channel, Ports North's maintenance work having left the port tricky for deep-draft vessels at certain tides.
The ship had been scheduled to dock overnight in Cairns on 29 September. Instead, Carnival told guests it would sail on the evening of the 29th, taking advantage of better tidal conditions rather than risk a delayed departure the next day. In place of a second day in Cairns, the ship will now call at Townsville. Anyone with a shore excursion booked for the cancelled day gets it shifted to day one if possible, or a refund.
The root cause is the port's annual maintenance dredging campaign, which keeps the main channels deep enough for large ships. Ports North says it is trying to soften the disruption through bed levelling, alternative dredging methods and bringing the 2026 campaign forward, but dredging is expected to continue until November.
It has already been a bumpy month. Carnival Encounter and Carnival Splendor both had Cairns calls adjusted earlier in September, and Carnival Splendor's stop turned messy when the ship tendered passengers from Yorkeys Knob instead of docking. Reports described long queues, with some passengers still lining up after the ship's scheduled 4 pm departure time.
More changes could be on the way. Crown Princess is due in Cairns on 29 October, with a Carnival ship calling the day before, and larger vessels including Noordam, Grand Princess and Carnival Luminosa are booked through the season. Whether they can berth as planned depends largely on how the dredging timeline plays out. Smaller ships on the schedule are far less likely to hit depth problems.
For anyone cruising to Cairns in the next few weeks, the practical takeaway is to expect the unexpected. Watch for notices from your cruise line, don't lock in independent tours for port days until schedules are confirmed, and consider travel insurance that covers itinerary changes. If your ship does swap Cairns for Townsville, that's not a bad consolation — it's a compact city with a reef aquarium, the Strand waterfront and easy access to Magnetic Island.
