Booking a holiday through Costco Travel can earn you more than just a decent package price. On selected trips, the warehouse giant hands back a Costco Shop Card — essentially store credit — as a rebate, and the value never expires. It's an easy perk to overlook, but for anyone with a membership (or considering one), it can quietly knock a chunk off future grocery and household runs.
Here's the mechanics. The rebate only applies to certain travel packages booked through Costco Travel — think cruises, vacation bundles and rental cars rather than plain flights. Once your trip is done, the card arrives digitally. The timing depends on what you booked: cruise and package bookings see the card emailed roughly 10 days after the trip starts, while rental car bookings take longer, landing three to four weeks after you return the vehicle.
The cards work at any Costco in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico, plus online at Costco.com. There's a cap to know about: a single card can hold a maximum of $2,000, so a large rebate gets split across several cards. A $4,150 benefit, for instance, arrives as two $2,000 cards and one for the remaining $150. You can also email a card to someone else if you'd rather gift it.
The real appeal is flexibility. Unlike airline credits or hotel vouchers, the Shop Card doesn't have to go back into travel at all — stock up on groceries, electronics, petrol (on physical cards only) or whatever else you actually need. A few catches to note: digital cards can't be used at Costco petrol stations, and no card can be refunded or swapped for cash, so treat it as spending money rather than a refund.
Who should care? Frequent cruisers and package-holiday bookers get the most value, since those bookings tend to carry the biggest rebates. If you already shop at Costco, it's close to free money; if you don't, it's worth weighing the membership cost against how often you'd realistically use the credit. Either way, when comparing holiday prices, it pays to factor the Shop Card into the total — a package that looks marginally pricier elsewhere can work out cheaper once a few hundred dollars of store credit comes back your way.
