Valletta's Grand Harbour has welcomed yet another big cruise name. The Carnival Freedom docked at the Valletta Cruise Port for the first time on October 15, 2026, becoming the fifth Carnival Cruise Line ship to call in Malta after the Vista, Horizon, Pride and Legend.
The visit came partway through an eight-night Western Mediterranean sailing that departed from Barcelona and called at Marseille in France, plus Livorno, Civitavecchia and Naples in Italy, before finishing with Malta. Port officials and local authorities joined the ship's team onboard for a plaque and gift exchange to mark the maiden call, and Valletta Cruise Port used the moment to big up Malta's draw as a Mediterranean stop: history, heritage and island experiences all in one port day.
There's a bit of backstory to how the Freedom ended up in European waters at all. The 110,000-ton ship paused its usual Florida and Bahamas programme in early September and sailed across for a drydock at the Chantier Naval de Marseille in France — routine maintenance that also included fitting a new funnel. Guests were welcomed back aboard in early October for this single Med cruise, and the ship is now working its way back across the Atlantic to Port Canaveral.
From early November, the Freedom returns to what it knows best: four- and five-night Bahamas cruises from Central Florida, calling at Nassau and Carnival's private island spots, including Celebration Key and RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay.
For cruisers, the takeaway is twofold. If you've been eyeing a short Bahamas getaway from Port Canaveral, the Freedom will be back on that beat before the end of the year with a freshly refitted funnel and a mid-life spruce-up behind it. And if you're cruising the Mediterranean instead, Malta keeps proving itself as a port worth the itinerary slot — walkable Valletta puts baroque streets, St John's Co-Cathedral and harbour viewpoints within minutes of the pier.
