One of the British Virgin Islands' most relaxed stops is about to switch its lights back on. Cooper Island Beach Club, a family-owned retreat on the small island of Cooper, reopens for the season on Nov. 1, 2026, after its annual closure. If you're sailing the BVI this winter, it's worth building a day around it — or a night.
The setup is simple and hard to beat. The Beach Club sits on Cooper's sandy northwest shore, looking out at the Sir Francis Drake Channel, with the restaurant right on the beach. Sailors pull into the bay, step ashore, swim, eat and drift back to their boats whenever they feel like it. The kitchen serves seafood alongside local and international dishes, and the Coffee Box handles breakfast duty with coffee and pastries for anyone arriving before lunch.
Drinks are the real draw. The Rum Bar stocks one of the bigger rum selections in the Virgin Islands, spanning bottles from across the Caribbean. And if rum isn't your thing, the property runs its own solar-powered microbrewery, brewing beer on site — an unusual claim for an island this small.
Stay the night and you'll be one of very few. There are just eight beachfront rooms, set among palms and gardens with channel views, private balconies and no air conditioning — just fans and sea breezes. Overnight guests get the island after the day boats leave: quiet mornings, unhurried breakfasts and evenings with the anchorage to themselves. The property survived the 2017 hurricanes and rebuilt, so its return each season has become something of a fixture in the BVI calendar.
Beyond eating and drinking, there's kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling, plus a dive shop run by Sail Caribbean Divers. But Cooper Island doesn't really demand an itinerary — that's the point. It's a place where a swim can turn into lunch, lunch can turn into a rum tasting, and the afternoon takes care of itself.
One practical note if you want to sleep over: the property's main page lists Nov. 1 as reopening day, but the guest-room page currently shows availability from Nov. 7. Contact the Beach Club directly to confirm dates and arrange your boat transfer before locking anything in.
