Picture Christmas at 31°C with a sea breeze instead of snow, and you've got Bali on 25 December. The island is majority Hindu, so there's no tinsel on every corner or carols in the street — instead, the festive action lives inside hotels, restaurants and beach clubs, where the centrepiece is an epic Christmas Day brunch that stretches well into the afternoon.
For 2026 (Christmas falls on a Friday), the brunch line-up already includes some strong options. In Sanur, Andaz Bali's Village Square is hosting a community-style feast at IDR 990,000++ per person, or IDR 1,500,000++ with selected drinks, running 12.30–3.30pm. Just next door, Hyatt Regency Bali serves a relaxed beachfront brunch at Pizzaria from 12pm–3pm for IDR 910,000++ (IDR 1,500,000++ with alcohol). Over in Nusa Dua, Cucina at the Sofitel is going big: Italian, French and Asian dishes, live music, a children's choir and a Santa appearance, priced at IDR 1,350,000++ per adult and IDR 625,000++ per child aged 6–12, from 11am–3pm.
One quirk worth knowing: dedicated Christmas Day dinners are rare here. Most venues put their festive menus into the 25 December brunch and a Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th. And since both Christmas Day and 24 December (a joint leave day in Indonesia) are public holidays, banks and government offices including immigration will be shut, and the roads — especially around Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu — are among the year's worst. Book a driver or Grab in advance, and ideally pick a brunch close to your hotel.
If brunch isn't your thing, the day has plenty of other shapes. Beach it at Sanur or Nusa Dua with kids, or Seminyak and Canggu if you want bars and beach clubs. Families can spend the day at Waterbom or Bali Zoo, while culture-seekers might try a water purification ritual at Tirta Empul or catch the sunset kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple. There's also Blimbingsari, a Christian village in West Bali, where Christmas comes wrapped in Balinese tradition — families in traditional dress sharing local food. Just keep plans flexible: December is wet season, so expect the odd downpour.
Hotels that reliably go all out for the season include the Apurva Kempinski and AYANA in Jimbaran, Hyatt Regency Sanur, Bali Dynasty in Kuta (56m waterslide, kids' club — good value for families), Bisma Eight in Ubud for a jungle setting, Alila Seminyak, Regent Bali Canggu and Renaissance Uluwatu with its kids' club. Most offer festive packages with decorated trees and Santa drop-ins.
Who is a Bali Christmas actually for? Travellers happy to trade mulled wine for a morning surf, who like the idea of a boozy palm-shaded lunch, and who'll book early — the best brunches sell out weeks or months ahead, and peak-season prices climb as December approaches. Wear linen, not jumpers, and you're set.
