Citi's ThankYou programme now revolves around three personal cards, and the eligibility rules are friendlier than many people assume. The line-up spans the $595-a-year Citi Strata Elite, the $95 Strata Premier and the no-fee Strata Card — and each one is judged independently, so in theory you can hold all three and earn all three welcome offers.
The current bonuses are worth knowing: 75,000 ThankYou points after $6,000 of spend in three months on the Strata Elite, 60,000 points after $4,000 on the Strata Premier, and 20,000 points after just $1,000 on the no-fee Strata Card.
A few rules govern how quickly you can stack them. Citi applies an 8/65 limit: generally one approval every eight days, and no more than two every 65 days, counting only Citi applications. Welcome bonuses are now tied to a once-in-a-lifetime rule per exact card — the old 48-month reset is gone. So if you earned the Strata Premier bonus years ago, that specific bonus is closed to you permanently, but you can still earn the Elite and Strata Card bonuses. Note the no-fee Strata Card's history matters too: it used to be the Citi Rewards+ Card, so a bonus on that predecessor blocks the new one. Existing Citi Prestige cardholders, meanwhile, remain eligible across the whole line-up.
On approvals, Citi doesn't publish a score cut-off, but a score of around 700 is a sensible floor, with 740+ giving you a comfortable shot. Income, existing Citi credit lines and history all factor in, and Citi may pull from Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. Decisions are often instant; if yours goes to manual review, expect an answer within about a week. A denial just leaves a hard inquiry worth a few temporary points — you can reapply, though waiting roughly six months and improving your profile first is the smart move.
Why bother building this stack? Because ThankYou points transfer to airline and hotel partners at the best ratios only if you hold either the Strata Elite or the Strata Premier — and American AAdvantage is among the partners. That makes the pair genuinely useful for anyone chasing long-haul award seats. The Elite stacks perks aimed at frequent flyers: Priority Pass membership, American Admirals Club passes, up to $300 a year in hotel credit, a $200 Splurge Credit and $200 with Blacklane. The Premier counters with strong bonus categories and a $100 hotel credit, while the no-fee Strata Card tops up your earning rate.
A couple of gotchas: you only get a welcome bonus by applying directly — product changes and downgrades never trigger one — and being an authorised user on someone else's Citi card doesn't affect your own eligibility at all.
If you're planning award travel this year, the practical play is simple: pick the Elite or Premier based on whether you'll actually use lounge access and credits, add the no-fee card later for extra bonus categories, and space your applications around the 8/65 clock.
