Christmas in the desert is now a properly established thing, and Dubai's 2026 festive calendar is one of its fullest yet. The season stretches from December 1 all the way to January 10, anchored by a bumper crop of markets, shows and open-air screenings.
The big new arrival is the DXB Winter Festival at Dubai Festival City Mall, running December 1 to January 10 on the waterfront. More than 150 vendors — artisans plus festive food stalls — a funfair, Santa's grotto, a giant Christmas tree and live performances, open daily from 4pm to midnight.
The classic, though, is Madinat Jumeirah's Festive Market, back on Fort Island from December 4 to 27. It spreads across 1,750 square metres of the souk and is free to enter (3pm from Monday to Thursday, midday at weekends). The 36-foot tree dressed in baubles, stars and candy canes is the photo everyone comes for, with live seasonal music on top.
Culture-wise, Dubai Opera lands a genuine coup: the Bolshoi Ballet's first official UAE tour, performing Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker from December 4 to 6, with principal dancers and the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. Tickets start at Dhs495.
Families have plenty of options. Dear Santa at the New Covent Garden Theatre near Mall of the Emirates (December 4-25) is a six-room grotto experience following a letter sprite called Quill, from Dhs157 for kids. Theatre by QE2 runs two shows: Mission Elf-Possible on December 5, 6 and 12 (from Dhs75) and A Christmas Carol from December 17 to 24 (from Dhs79). Magic Phil brings his slapstick Croc 'N' Roll Christmas to Jumeirah Beach Hotel's Meyana Theatre December 11 to 13, from Dhs110.
Expo City's Winter City (December 11-31, from Dhs60, 4pm-10pm) has teamed up with Disney+ this year under a 'Once upon a holiday' theme — expect Frozen, Toy Story and Home Alone zones, princess meet-and-greets and outdoor film marathons.
For grown-ups, the Riviera Cinema Club at The Lana pairs rooftop films with a themed menu — Home Alone on December 11 and its sequel on December 18, at Dhs650 a head. On a budget? The Irish Village in Garhoud hosts a Christmas Cracker Concert on December 12 with a 21-piece orchestra for Dhs120, and JLT's free Cinema Under the Stars screens A Christmas Carol on December 26, with a Dhs30 beanbag-and-popcorn upgrade.
Why it matters: Dubai is a solid pick if you want sunshine, shopping and festivities without the winter gloom — and with events scattered from Garhoud to Expo City, it's worth clustering your plans by area and booking the Bolshoi and The Lana screenings early, as those will sell first.
