A well-known Cancún restaurant is starting the week in ruins. Del Pacífico Zarandeado & Grill, a busy eatery on Huayacán Avenue, was largely destroyed by a fire that broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning. Firefighters arrived to find the building fully engulfed, and by the time the blaze was brought under control, roughly 85 percent of the premises was burned beyond saving.

The restaurant sat in Supermanzana 313, at the corner of Huayacán Avenue and Ciricote Street — part of the fast-growing corridor that runs inland from the hotel zone, where locals and visitors alike have been heading for everything from outlet shopping to Marisquería-style seafood. Del Pacífico specialised in zarandeado, the fire-grilled fish that is a signature of Mexican Pacific coast cooking, and had built a solid following among Cancunenses.

Cancún's fire department said crews responded to a 911 call and managed to extinguish the fire, though they described the operation as one that demanded their full skill and focus. No cause has been confirmed; the incident remains under investigation. There were no reports of injuries in the early-morning blaze, which unfolded before the restaurant would have opened for service.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is modest but real. Huayacán Avenue is one of the areas of Cancún that visitors are increasingly exploring beyond the beach and the hotel zone — it is home to shopping centres, chain hotels and a growing dining scene. If Del Pacífico was on your list, it is off the table for now, and it is too early to say whether the business will rebuild. As always in Cancún, it is worth double-checking that a specific restaurant is open before making the trip inland, especially for places that have recently been in the news.

The bigger picture: this is a reminder that Cancún is a working city as well as a resort, and that its neighbourhood dining scene — the places locals actually eat — sits alongside the glossy hotel zone offerings. If you are staying near Huayacán or flying into Cancún International and basing yourself inland, the seafood tradition Del Pacífico represented is alive and well elsewhere in the city; mariscos spots abound, and asking a local for their favourite zarandeado is rarely a wasted question.

We will update if an official cause for the fire is released.
