Belize City's historic Fort George hotel has become Marriott's second Autograph Collection property in Belize, joining Alaia Belize on Ambergris Caye, which entered the portfolio in 2021. For Marriott Bonvoy members, it means a proper waterfront option in the capital's most storied neighbourhood where you can now earn and burn points.

The timing is no accident. Fort George is mid-expansion. The hotel currently runs 64 rooms and suites, and a new Signature Sea View Tower — designed by Arguelles Architects and slated to open later this autumn — will add another 66 keys, including two Signature Sea View Penthouses, for a total of 130. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over Belize City and the Caribbean, with a design palette of warm woods, natural textures and locally sourced art.

The expansion goes beyond bedrooms. There's a new waterfront swimming pool and a retail boutique on the way, adding to the existing Courtyard Plunge Pool, K'IN Spa and BurnBox Gym. Roughly 4,500 square feet of event space is also being added, among it a boardroom with its own deck and a fourth-floor terrace over the sea — worth knowing if you're planning a small wedding or offsite.

Food and drink are getting a refresh too. A Mediterranean-inspired restaurant called Marea will join the existing Treehouse restaurant, while the new lobby bar, The George, will pour specialty coffee by day and cocktails built on Belizean botanicals by night. The art programme mixes historical photographs of Belize City's waterfront with contemporary Caribbean-inspired work, and selected pieces carry QR codes that explain their cultural background — a small touch that turns a corridor into a bit of context.

Why does this matter to travellers? Belize City is mostly a transit point for visitors heading to the cayes or the jungle, and genuinely good hotels there have been thin on the ground. Fort George, in the leafy Fort George neighbourhood by the water, has long been the strongest pick if you have an early flight, a late arrival or a night on either side of a trip out to San Pedro or Placencia. Now it carries Marriott's Autograph banner — a flag that's meant to signal independent character rather than cookie-cutter consistency — and it plugs into Bonvoy, so points balances finally have something useful to chase in Belize's biggest city.

If you're booking, the tower, pool and dining venues are rolling out through the autumn, so it's worth confirming what's open before you arrive. Pair a city night here with beach time at Alaia in San Pedro and you've now got a matched set of Autograph stays covering both sides of a Belize trip.
