Fiji's long-shuttered Westin on Denarau has a new identity: JW Marriott Fiji Resort & Spa, the first JW Marriott anywhere in the Pacific Islands. Marriott International and owner Fiji National Provident Fund expect construction to wrap at the end of 2026, with doors opening between January and March 2027. Reservations should go live in December 2026, though no exact date or opening rates have been announced yet.
The property closed in January 2023 for what was meant to be a straightforward refresh. The redevelopment scope grew as the owner weighed how the resort would stack up against Fiji's newer, glitzier competition, and the result is a 282-key resort positioned squarely in the luxury bracket.
The room mix is where it gets interesting for different types of travellers. Alongside standard guestrooms and suites, there will be two-bedroom villas with private swimming pools — an obvious draw for families travelling with grandparents or anyone wanting resort facilities without resort-level noise. The adults-only side is unusually substantial too: 72 rooms and suites set aside for grown-ups, 28 of them with private plunge pools, plus a dedicated adults-only pool with its own bar and dining.
Families aren't an afterthought. There's a large main pool, a kids club and, notably, a teen zone — a rarity that acknowledges the awkward age group most resorts ignore once children outgrow supervised crafts.
Food-wise, the plan includes a Japanese-influenced specialty restaurant built around local ingredients, an all-day venue mixing international dishes with Pacific flavours, a wine and cocktail lounge for evenings, a JW Market for grab-and-go snacks, and a separate Fijian dining and cultural experience.
Denarau already hosts Marriott's Sheraton properties and the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay elsewhere on the mainland, so the group knows the market well. What this adds is a recognisable ultra-luxury flag at an address many repeat visitors to Fiji will already know well — familiar location, considerably elevated product. For couples, it's a rare chance to get genuine adults-only space within a full-service resort rather than a quiet corner of a family hotel. For multi-generational trips, the pool villas could solve the "enough rooms but one shared hub" problem in one booking.
The long runway before opening is also worth noting: with reservations expected a full year ahead, early 2027 dates and villa categories should be lockable well before demand spikes around the brand launch. Watch for rates when bookings open in December 2026.
