A direct flight between Astana and New York could become reality in 2027, if two things fall into place: a clean final report from the US Federal Aviation Administration and the arrival of Air Astana's first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The FAA audited Kazakhstan's civil aviation system a few weeks ago and gave a positive preliminary verdict, with the official report due in November. Kazakhstan's government is aiming for authorisation to fly to the US by the end of this year. On the aircraft side, a Dreamliner capable of covering the long-haul route is expected in December, after which crews and technicians need to log the required flight hours before it enters service.
The plane in question is Air Astana's first Boeing 787-9, registered EI-KZA, which began factory flight testing in Charleston, South Carolina, on 1 October. Boeing is running certification procedures ahead of delivery. The first three 787-9s are slated to join the airline in 2027, replacing older Boeing 767-300ERs and unlocking longer international routes.
New York is only part of the story. Air Astana has been aggressively growing its Astana hub: eight new destinations launched in 2026 (including Guangzhou, Bangkok, Larnaca, Batumi and Salalah) on top of seven in 2025 such as Jeddah, Nha Trang and Kutaisi. The network from the capital now spans 32 destinations, and weekly international frequencies are climbing from 99 to 116, with big boosts on Beijing (up 55% in capacity versus 2025), Seoul and Istanbul (both up 20%). Aircraft based in Astana will grow from 16 this summer to 22 in 2027.
For travellers, this would be a genuine time-saver. There is currently no nonstop option between Central Asia and New York, so a direct link would cut hours off journeys that typically route through Istanbul, Dubai or Frankfurt. It also puts Kazakhstan on the radar as more than a stopover — Almaty's mountains, the Caspian steppe and the futuristic architecture of Astana itself all become easier to reach from the US East Coast.
Watch the FAA's final report in November as the key milestone. If it lands well and the Dreamliner clears its flight-hour requirements, expect tickets and a launch date to follow. Anyone with a 2027 New York–Central Asia trip in mind should keep an eye on Air Astana announcements over the coming months.
