Three stories from the Maldives this month show how far beyond the overwater villa the country's resort scene now stretches: a house reef doubling as a research site, a five-star island turning into a running track, and a festive programme built around dragons and football legends.
First, the sharks. Pullman Maldives Maamutaa has added six individual Indo-Pacific leopard sharks to the national identification database run by MIYARU, the Maldives' non-profit shark research network. Each shark — Atlas, Aurelian, Kikongo, Ambala, Ingwe and Fowler, catalogued as LS081 through LS097 — was recognised by its unique pattern of spots, which works much like a human fingerprint. The in-water photography and paperwork were handled by Kayla Shortt, the resort's resident marine biologist and PADI instructor, who has worked across Maldivian luxury resorts since 2021. For guests, the practical takeaway is simple: snorkel the house reef and there's a decent chance you're swimming past a shark that scientists know by name. Every tourist photo submitted to such databases genuinely helps researchers track how these sharks use local reefs.
Over on Dhonakulhi, Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa hosted the second edition of the Maldives Hideaway Resort Run on 18 September, timed to World Wellness Weekend. Sixty-eight runners took part in 5K and 10K races led by athletes Sunny Schippers and Clara Abbona, with the usual race kit of timing bibs, medals and trophies — a rarity for a resort event. The weekend layered on sound healing, yoga and physio sessions, and it's backed by Visit Maldives with Maldivian airline as transport partner. Organisers at Lily Hotels are openly aiming to make it a flagship luxury running event, with a third edition planned for February 2027 to mark Visit Maldives Year. Even casual guests can join in: run a 5K on the official route this year and you can claim the leftover runner's kit.
And for anyone booking the festive season, Siyam World is launching 'The Age of Legends' from 15 December — a Game of Thrones-meets-Lord of the Rings themed programme across the island. The headline names are footballers rather than actors: former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić runs a kids' football camp from 18 December, followed by ex-AC Milan striker Alessandro Matri from 25–27 December. There's also an original musical based on the classic Maldivian legend of Dhonhiyala and Alifulhu, a Dragon Rider Academy for children, a four-worlds New Year's Eve party, and a social media challenge with a seven-night stay for two (including seaplane transfers) as the prize.
Why does this matter to travellers? The Maldives is quietly positioning itself as more than a honeymoon default. If you want purpose with your snorkelling, resorts like Pullman Maamutaa let you contribute to real citizen science. If you'd rather earn your beach time, a timed island run is a genuinely unusual way to see an atoll. And families now have festive options that go well beyond a beach BBQ.
