Nothing stages Christmas like London. Regent Street and Oxford Street switch on their lights, shop windows become mini-theatre, and the big five-star hotels in Mayfair, Knightsbridge and the Strand quietly compete to put on the most spectacular festive show in town. A new guide rounds up the best luxury hotels to base yourself at for a December stay — and the detail that goes into each one is remarkable.
Claridge's remains the icon. Every November a famous designer unveils its foyer Christmas tree — recent names include Louis Vuitton, Paul Smith and Burberry's Daniel Lee, whose 2025 tree wore around 600 bows made from surplus Burberry fabric. Its three-night Christmas package has featured stockings, carols and a horse-drawn carriage ride. Nearby, The Connaught goes quieter but classier, with an artist-designed tree outside (Rachel Whiteread built a 31-footer in 2023) and fires burning through the public rooms.
The Savoy treats the season as a full production: its 2025 theme was a "Frosted Fair" inspired by the frost fairs once held on the frozen Thames, with evening snowfall at the entrance from 1 December. The Lanesborough is the pick for a full-service Christmas Day — every room has a butler, and its "Christmas in Residence" stay has included a tree in your suite plus a Harrods personal-shopping partnership. The Goring, just behind Buckingham Palace, is the traditionalist's choice, with carols, mulled wine by the fire and Christmas lunch in its Michelin-starred Dining Room.
Further afield, Raffles London at the Old War Office brings festive grandeur to Whitehall; The Langham sits at the top of Regent Street's lights with a Liberty-linked afternoon tea; Ham Yard in Soho is the playful family pick, complete with a rooftop Winter Fire Garden; The Ned delivers the party atmosphere; and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park puts Winter Wonderland on your literal doorstep.
A few booking rules apply. Festive programmes are usually announced in early-to-mid November, and packages at the big names often sell out before the month is out — Christmas Eve dates go first. Afternoon teas book out weeks ahead even for hotel guests, so reserve separately. Early December is usually better value than the days around the 25th, and remember the Tube doesn't run on Christmas Day itself, so pick a hotel you'd happily stay put in.
