Maldives holidays have long been about beaches and overwater villas. This season, a wave of resorts are making the food and drink the headline act, flying in winemakers, sommeliers and award-listed bartenders for intimate guest experiences.
The most forward-dated announcement comes from V Villas Maldives at Mirihi, a 42-villa private-island resort in South Ari Atoll. On Monday, 16 November 2026, it hosts a wine dinner built around Hunter's Wines, Marlborough's oldest independent family-owned winery, founded in 1979 by Ernie and Jane Hunter. James Macdonald, the winery's COO and senior winemaker, will host alongside Chelsea Macdonald and sommelier Khail van Niekerk of Grape Expectations Maldives, talking guests through the family's story while the kitchen serves a menu matched to a broad slice of the range: MiruMiru sparkling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer. It's a rare chance to hear a founding-family winemaker speak in a setting of roughly a few dozen villas rather than a convention hall.
Mirihi itself is worth knowing beyond one dinner. The resort runs a wine cellar stocked with more than 300 labels, two restaurants, the AKOYA Sea Lounge and a house reef that's among the most praised in the atoll — a good fit for travellers who want diving or snorkelling alongside serious dining.
Closer term, Milaidhoo Maldives in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — welcomes Loire Valley producer Pascal Jolivet for a five-course wine-pairing dinner on 4 December. Guests will taste Sancerre Signature 2023, Pouilly-Fumé Indigène 2023, Attitude Pinot Noir 2024 and Sancerre Rosé 2024, each poured and explained by Jolivet in person.
Mixology is getting a look-in too. From 25 to 27 November 2026, JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll hosts a three-night takeover with RED Bar from New Delhi, named on India's 30 Best Bars list for 2025, led by mixologist Virender Singh. The programme moves across three venues: signature serves at the overwater Nikkei Bar, a garden-to-glass night at JW Garden, and a beachfront finale at Wahoo Bar.
For travellers, the takeaway is that the Maldives is quietly building a food-and-wine calendar worth planning around. These events suit couples and food-focused travellers who already have the island-break basics covered and want something to anchor a trip. Because resorts are small, access to the visiting talent is genuinely personal — you can ask questions over dinner rather than watch from the back of a room. If your dates are flexible, booking a stay that overlaps one of these evenings costs nothing extra but can end up being the highlight of the week. Just note the lead times: some dates sit well over a year out, so check directly with each resort before locking in flights.
