A slice of the Loire Valley is heading to the tropics. Milaidhoo Maldives, the resort in Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is hosting French winemaker Pascal Jolivet for an exclusive five-course wine-pairing dinner on 4 December — with the man himself presenting each pour.
Jolivet founded his wine house in 1987 and has built a reputation for letting the natural character of Loire Valley vineyards speak for itself. His wines are known for freshness, precision and elegance, particularly his Sauvignon Blanc-driven whites from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Guests at the dinner will work through a curated selection that spans his range: Sancerre Signature 2023, Pouilly-Fumé Indigène 2023, Attitude Pinot Noir 2024 and Sancerre Rosé 2024. Each wine arrives alongside a dish created specifically to match it, so the evening works as a guided tasting rather than a standard resort dinner.
The real draw is access. Milaidhoo's resident wine sommelier, Nikhil Bakle, frames it well: rather than just drinking what's in the glass, guests get to hear directly from the winemaker about his philosophy and what goes into each bottle. For anyone who has ever picked up a bottle of Sancerre and wondered what's behind it, that's a rare setup — usually you'd travel to the Loire to get this close to the source.
The dinner fits Milaidhoo's wider positioning. The resort leans heavily on food and drink as part of the island experience, with a focus on quality ingredients and a carefully chosen cellar, so wine-focused travellers are exactly the audience it courts. And the setting doesn't hurt: Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, famous for its marine life including seasonal manta and whale shark encounters, so a wine evening can sit comfortably alongside snorkelling and barefoot island days.
It's worth noting this isn't an isolated event — the Maldives resort scene has quietly become a serious destination for wine and cocktail programming. Later in the season, Glenelly Estate from Stellenbosch runs a week-long wine takeover across RAAYA and VARU by Atmosphere in December, and JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll hosts a three-night bar takeover with New Delhi's RED Bar. If a specific winemaker or date matters to your trip, book around the event rather than hoping it lines up.
For wine lovers already considering a Maldives escape, an evening with a respected Loire producer adds genuine substance to the trip — and if you can't make 4 December, Milaidhoo's regular wine programme and cellar are reason enough to book a table anyway.
