Cape Town is finally getting a non-stop link to Australia. Qantas has announced its first-ever direct flights between Cape Town and Sydney, cutting out the usual detour through Johannesburg or another international hub.

The seasonal route kicks off on 19 October 2027, running three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner handles the roughly 14-hour-25-minute hop, and the service will operate through to 24 March 2028. That first season alone adds close to 30,000 seats between Australia and South Africa.

Until now, the Cape Town-Sydney trip has always involved a connection, usually with a stop in Joburg where the existing Qantas service lands. Sydney becomes the payoff for travellers in the Western Cape: one flight, one boarding pass, and a far less exhausting way to reach Australia's biggest city.

The timing makes sense. More than 120,000 Australians visited South Africa in 2025, and nearly 225,000 South African-born people now call Australia home — a sizeable pool of family visitors, returning expats and holidaymakers who have long had to route through Gauteng. Qantas itself is no stranger to the country: it has flown scheduled services to South Africa since 1952, and Cape Town becomes its second South African destination after Johannesburg.

For the Western Cape, the route could open the region up to more Australian tourists, while locals get a simpler gateway to Sydney and onward connections across Australia. Return economy fares are reportedly starting at around R20,499, though prices will shift with availability and travel dates — worth checking Qantas' site before booking. Note the flights are still subject to regulatory approval, so watch for confirmation before locking in plans.

If you've been putting off an Australia trip because of the multi-leg slog, this is the news to act on. Set a reminder for when bookings open, and consider whether the October-to-March window — South African spring through summer, Australian late spring through high summer — lines up with the trip you actually want, whether that's a Cape Town wine-season start or a Sydney summer at the other end.
