Qatar Airways' marathon Doha-Auckland service is on the move again. Since June, the Gulf carrier's daily New Zealand flight has stopped in Adelaide because of the war in Iran, a fallback from the nonstop service the airline ran for nine years. That stopover now shifts to Melbourne on December 9, with Brisbane set to follow in July 2027.

The numbers behind it are striking: the Auckland-to-Doha leg runs about 20 hours and 10 minutes even with the fuel stop, putting it among the world's longest flights. From December 9, the daily service will fly Doha-Melbourne, continue to Auckland, then return the same way, using a 354-seat Boeing 777-300ER. The Melbourne stop replaces the Adelaide routing flown since June, which itself was a stand-in for pre-pandemic nonstops.

The Melbourne timing is not ideal for anyone actually continuing to New Zealand. The aircraft lands from Doha at 11:20 PM and departs for Auckland at 1:20 AM, arriving at 6:50 AM. Coming back, you leave Auckland at 1:15 PM and connect in Melbourne at 3:10 PM before the 5:10 PM departure to Doha. Interestingly, Qatar Airways holds fifth freedom rights on the Melbourne-Auckland leg, meaning it can sell tickets just between Australia and New Zealand — making it the only non-Australian, non-New Zealand carrier on that city pair since China Airlines pulled its Taipei route in 2025.

For Adelaide travellers, there's good news buried in the shuffle: once the Auckland flight moves to Melbourne, Adelaide goes back to a dedicated Doha service on an Airbus A350-900, with every seat sold locally rather than shared with New Zealand traffic. That means more capacity for Adelaide flyers heading to Europe, going up against Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

What comes next depends on geopolitics rather than aviation. Qatar Airways wants to reinstate true nonstop Doha-Auckland flights — cheaper to operate and far more competitive against rival one-stop services to Europe — and that could happen at some point in 2027 if conditions allow. In the meantime, the Melbourne routing is scheduled to run until June 24, 2027, after which the flight briefly pauses for a week before resuming via Brisbane on July 1, arriving in Auckland at 5:55 AM.

If you're booking Doha to Auckland this winter, the practical takeaway is simple: expect an overnight transit in Melbourne, pick your seat for the full 20-hour haul, and check whether the Adelaide or Melbourne version suits your connection plans. Anyone flying business between Melbourne and Auckland gets an unusual option — a Gulf carrier's widebody cabin on a three-hour trans-Tasman hop.
