Abu Dhabi has quietly become the Gulf's combat sports capital, and it's adding another string to its bow: Real American Freestyle (RAF), the professional wrestling league, lands at Etihad Arena on Saturday, November 14 for its first Middle East event.
The headliner is a big one. Khamzat Chimaev — the Chechen-born UFC star who is now a naturalised UAE citizen and represents the country internationally — tops the bill in front of what will essentially be a home crowd. His opponent hasn't been named yet, with more matchups to be announced in the weeks before the event.
The undercard is no filler either. Names lined up include Henry Cejudo, the Olympic gold medallist and former two-division UFC champion, plus wrestling royalty like Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Snyder and Abdulrashid Sadulaev, and MMA contender Arman Tsarukyan. Opponents for those bouts are still to be confirmed.
There's more behind this than a one-off show. RAF has signed a five-year partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the UAE Wrestling Federation, so expect the league to become a regular fixture in the capital. The Abu Dhabi event will be RAF's third international outing in its debut year, following stops in Tbilisi, Georgia and Moscow, and comes after RAF12 in Cleveland marked the league's first anniversary and its biggest show so far.
