The Hero Dubai Desert Classic returns to Emirates Golf Club from Thursday January 21 to Sunday January 24, 2027, and Rory McIlroy has already confirmed he'll be on the Majlis Course chasing history. A win would give the Northern Irishman a fifth Dallah Trophy and cement his status as the most decorated player in the tournament's run — the 2027 edition is its 38th.

Dubai is where McIlroy's professional story began. He first played the event as a 16-year-old amateur in 2006, then claimed his maiden pro victory on the very same course in 2009. Further wins followed in 2015, 2023 and 2024, the most recent of those coming after he recovered from a 10-shot deficit — a comeback he has described as one of his favourites. He has long called the course one that suits his eye, and Dubai itself a second home.

He arrives in January as a six-time Major champion, having successfully defended his Masters title at Augusta National in April 2026. That put him in rare company: only Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods have previously won back-to-back Green Jackets.

For spectators, the pricing is unusually friendly. Thursday and Friday general admission is free with advance online registration, and early-bird weekend tickets cost Dhs85. That climbs to Dhs110 closer to the event and Dhs135 for walk-up purchases on the day. Under-17s — plus companions and carers — get in free on all four days, which makes it a solid family day out if you're in Dubai that month.

Even if golf isn't your main reason for travelling, the timing works nicely. Late January is peak season in Dubai: warm, sunny days when much of Europe is grey and cold. The tournament sits at Emirates Golf Club, an easy trip from the marina districts and downtown hotels, so it slots neatly into a winter-sun break. Register early for the free weekday entry and book weekend tickets ahead if you want the cheapest rate — the price steps up twice before gates open.

Tickets and registration go through the official Hero Dubai Desert Classic website.
