A pet-care business is not the first thing you'd expect to become a local institution on a Caribbean island, but on Ambergris Caye that's exactly what happened. Pampered Paws in San Pedro Town has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, having opened its doors on September 24, 2001. Founder Katia Marin marked the milestone with customer giveaways and a nod to her very first client, Karen Waight Canul, who received a year of free grooming for her loyalty. Marin even still keeps the $5 bill from the business's first-ever sale, made by early supporter Fiona Elliott.
What started as a grooming shop has grown into a full-service operation. Marin qualified as a certified dog trainer in 2003, and Pampered Paws now offers dog walking, daycare, boarding and training alongside its grooming work. That breadth of service is worth knowing about if you're travelling to Belize with a dog, or if you're already on the island and need someone to look after your pet for a day or a week.
The anniversary giveaways, which ran through September 26, show just how far the client base stretches. Winners included Nicole Lopez with a year of monthly grooming for her dog Bella, Gail Neal with ten half-days of daycare for Sadie, and Sherri Hansen with a training session for Molly. Even Caye Caulker, the laid-back island next door, was represented — Zenaida Patt won a full groom for Cloe and Shanna took home a bath package for Harley.
Perhaps the most telling detail is where some clients come from. Pampered Paws regularly serves dog owners travelling from Placencia, Belmopan, Belize City, and the Cayo and Corozal districts — people who cross a good chunk of the country, and sometimes the sea, specifically for this shop. For a business on a small island reachable only by boat or plane, that kind of loyalty says a lot.
