Scandinavian Airlines is running a status match that could be one of the better travel hacks of the moment: pay a fee, show elite status with another airline, and get SAS EuroBonus tier — which translates directly into perks when you fly Delta, even if you never set foot on an SAS plane.
The pricing starts at €89 (about $99) for Silver, with Gold at €199 and Diamond at €349. Eligible programs include American AAdvantage, United MileagePlus, Alaska, JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier, Spirit, Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways Club. Mapping is fairly generous: United Premier Silver holders get Silver, Premier Gold gets Gold, and Premier Platinum or 1K get Diamond. A Southwest Companion Pass — which costs nothing beyond the pass itself — qualifies for Diamond. Even Frontier Elite Diamond and BA Gold make the top tier.
Why bother with SAS status at all? EuroBonus sits in SkyTeam, and Delta honors SkyTeam elite benefits. Silver gets you free preferred seats (including exit rows on many aircraft), a free first checked bag, priority check-in and Zone 5 boarding. The columnist behind the piece notes he's long used Air France-KLM Gold for exactly this — free exit rows and bags on Delta without paying Delta's extra-legroom prices. An exit row with nothing in front of it can beat the Comfort+ seat Delta sells you.
Gold (SkyTeam Elite Plus) adds SkyPriority lanes, priority baggage and lounge access — but with a catch. Delta Sky Clubs admit non-Delta SkyTeam Elite Plus members only on same-day international itineraries, including a domestic connection to one, with one guest on the same flight. US–Caribbean routes don't count, and purely domestic trips get you nowhere in a Sky Club.
A few things to watch. Status runs to the end of your current EuroBonus membership year plus 12 more months, so timing your application can stretch it to nearly two years — and unlike SAS's 2024 offer, there's no flight requirement and US residents are explicitly welcome. Exclusions: you can't match from SkyTeam airlines, Singapore Airlines, TAP or Etihad, and residents of China, Brazil, Argentina, Hong Kong and Taiwan aren't eligible. You'll need a EuroBonus account and proof of your existing status; decisions take up to three days, and you're only charged if approved. There's no end date published — the offer closes when quota runs out.
Is Diamond worth the extra €150 over Gold? It buys no higher SkyTeam tier, so the alliance perks are identical. The upside is SAS-specific: better earning rates, stronger upgrade bids, same-day rebooking, non-expiring points and 30% off paid-point tickets. Matched members can't gift status, and the year doesn't count toward lifetime tiers. One smart angle: use Diamond as leverage for a future status match elsewhere.
If you hold any mid-to-high airline elite tier and fly Delta even occasionally, an €89 Silver match that unlocks free exit rows and a free checked bag could pay for itself in a single round trip.
