A violent collision on a highway just outside Chetumal has left at least two people fighting serious injuries in hospital, and it happened on a stretch of road many travellers use when heading to or from Mexico's southern border.
The crash took place on Tuesday night near the small community of Huay-Pix, roughly 15 minutes west of Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo and the main gateway city for travellers crossing into Belize. According to local reports, a car collided at highway speed with a small cargo truck, and the impact left the car completely wrecked.
State Police were the first emergency service on the scene, where passing motorists had already stopped to call for help and assist people trapped inside the crushed vehicle. An ambulance rushed at least two occupants of the car to hospital in Chetumal, where they were listed in serious condition. Police have not released the names of those injured, and no official cause for the crash has been announced yet.
For holidaymakers, the location matters more than the details. This highway connects Chetumal with communities to the west and forms part of the route network linking the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya areas with the Belize border — a corridor popular with road-trippers, backpackers heading to Belize, and travellers combining Mexico's Caribbean coast with Central America.
Collisions involving trucks and cars travelling at highway speed are, sadly, not rare on roads in this part of Mexico, particularly after dark. Night driving in southern Quintana Roo comes with real risks: poorly lit stretches, slow-moving cargo vehicles, and limited emergency coverage outside city centres. If your plans include a self-drive trip between Cancún, Tulum, Chetumal or Belize, it's worth building in daylight driving hours where you can, keeping distances from freight vehicles generous, and knowing that help from fellow drivers is often quicker than official response times.
For now, the injured remain in hospital and investigators are still working out what caused the collision. Travellers passing through the area this week should expect possible temporary disruption near Huay-Pix while the scene is cleared, though the highway itself remains open.
