Nothing gets you in the festive mood quite like mulled wine in a historic square — and doing it by ship means you unpack once while the markets come to you. A round-up of sailings for late 2026 shows there's still a solid choice of Christmas market cruises, from budget-friendly no-fly options out of UK ports to longer river journeys linking three countries.
The cheapest way in is an ocean cruise from Southampton. MSC's seven-night northern Europe loop on MSC Preziosa starts at £579pp, calling at Hamburg and Rotterdam (both dock near their markets) plus Normandy ports Cherbourg and Le Havre for cheese, cider and vin chaud. It's a big-ship option too: 20 bars and lounges, a bowling alley, indoor pool and an F1 simulator for the off-market hours. Ambassador's six-night sailing from London Tilbury on Ambition is also from £629pp and ticks off three countries — Hamburg's bratwurst and Glühwein, olliebollen near Amsterdam via IJmuiden, and chocolate waffles in Bruges from Zeebrugge. Onboard extras include craft sessions and comedy from former footballer Paul Boardman. Fred Olsen's Balmoral, carrying 1,250 guests and small enough for the Seine, sails from Southampton on 10 December from £1,149pp, with an overnight in Rouen for its lights, cider and caramel.
River cruises get you right into city centres. Tui's five-night Danube trip on Tui Isla departs 27 November from £1,219pp including flights, with Vienna's huge Christkindlmarkt, brass bands in Krems and Baroque Linz; meals with drinks and wifi are included. Riviera Travel's five-night Imperial Cities itinerary runs 15 December from £1,049pp, pairing a guided Budapest tour with Bratislava and Vienna, plus a classical recital on a five-star ship. VIVA Cruises offers a French alternative: five nights on the Seine from Paris aboard its newest all-suite ship, VIVA Beyond, from £895pp, with stops in medieval Les Andelys and Rouen's half-timbered old town.
For a proper deep-dive, Viking's 11-night Christmas on the Main & Moselle is the splurge at £3,795pp, departing 16 December. It threads Paris and Reims to Trier, Bernkastel, Cochem, Heidelberg, Bamberg and Nuremberg — gingerbread country — and ends with two nights in Prague. Wine and beer with meals, tips, wifi and most shore excursions are all in the fare.
Why it matters: these cruises solve the classic Christmas market problem of piecing together trains and hotels. Most UK departures are no-fly, while river options bundle flights, transfers and often drinks into the price. Budget travellers can get a four-country festive fix for under £600; those wanting finer dining and smaller ships have options too. Book soon — December sailings fill early.
