Singapore has a reputation for being expensive, and it's not entirely undeserved — but some of the city's best experiences cost nothing at all. A new round-up from The Smart Local lists 44 free activities across parks, museums, temples, playgrounds and quirky one-offs, and it's a useful read for anyone planning a stopover or a budget stay in the city-state.

The outdoors is where the list shines. Gardens by the Bay is free to wander outside its ticketed conservatories, and the nightly Garden Rhapsody light show at the Supertree Grove is free too, running at 7.45pm and 8.45pm daily, with extra sessions during the festive season. Hikers get plenty of options: the 350m Marang Trail from Harbourfront up Mount Faber connects to the 10km Southern Ridges route, which takes in the elevated Forest Walk and Henderson Waves, Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge. There's also the 7km trek to the MacRitchie TreeTop Walk suspension bridge, the coastal trails and WWII relics at Labrador Park, and the wildlife-rich boardwalks of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. For something quirkier, Bukit Batok Town Park — nicknamed "Xiao Guilin" for its resemblance to China's Guilin hills — features a dramatic granite outcrop rising from a flooded old quarry.

Culture is well covered too. Singapore's national museums offer free entry for certain exhibitions and for locals, and the list highlights the Peranakan Museum, the Changi Chapel & Museum for WWII history, and the State Courts Heritage Gallery. Religious landmarks including St Andrew's Cathedral, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman — Singapore's oldest Hindu temple — are all free to visit. The Little India Heritage Trail and the murals of Tiong Bahru make for self-guided walking itineraries.

Families and one-of-a-kind experiences get their own sections. Kids can burn off energy at Tengah's fruit-themed playgrounds or Sembawang Hot Spring Park, while adults might take the ferry to Pulau Ubin and walk the Chek Jawa wetlands. Among the more unusual entries: Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last surviving traditional village on the island; the 400m jetty at Woodlands Waterfront Park, Singapore's longest; and the CapitaSpring Sky Garden for high-rise views. Even a 24-hour browse of the cavernous Mustafa Centre makes the cut.

Why it matters: Singapore routinely ranks among Asia's priciest cities, so knowing that a full itinerary of trails, light shows, museums and heritage sites costs zero is a genuine money-saver for budget travellers and families alike. Most of these spots are reachable by MRT, making them easy to slot into a few days in the city.
