A professional carver turning a several-hundred-pound pumpkin into a sculpture is not something you see every day — but Calgary is about to. The Colossal Carve, titled 'Heart of the Harvest', returns to the Calgary Farmers' Market on the first weekend of October 2026, and it's completely free.
The star of the show is champion carver Yann Blanchard, who will work live on enormous locally grown pumpkins across two days. Catch him at Calgary Farmers' Market West (25 Greenbriar Dr. NW) on Saturday, Oct. 3, then at the South location (510 77th Ave. SE) on Sunday, Oct. 4. Family activities run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, with the markets open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There's more than just carving. The Great Gourd Guess invites visitors to estimate the weight of one of the monster pumpkins, with a curated Thanksgiving Market Basket on the line. Kids get a complimentary Little Gourd Studio with decorating stations, plus a Golden Gourd Hunt that sends them around the market hunting for prizes.
If you can't make the weekend itself, the giant pumpkins and harvest displays arrive at the market on Friday, Sept. 25 — worth a look on their own. And since this all happens inside a working farmers' market, it's an easy excuse to stock up on local food while you're there. Parking is free at both locations, and so is everything happening on the day.
For travellers, this is a nicely timed autumn stop. Early October is peak harvest season in Alberta, and the two market locations make it simple to pair with other Calgary plans — the West market pairs well with a trip toward the city's northwest or a drive toward the Rockies, while the South site sits handy for the SE industrial belt and the route south. Come for the carving, stay for lunch from the vendors, and you've got a low-cost fall day out that works whether you're travelling with kids or on your own.
