An hour west of St. Louis and an hour east of Columbia sits Warrenton, a Warren County town that makes a handy low-key base for a Midwestern weekend — especially if you like your days spent outdoors and your evenings within striking distance of Missouri wine country.
Start with the green space. Warrenton's public parks cover 154 acres, and Binkley Woods Park is a standout: 35 acres of oak woodland wrapped around Spector Lake, with an easy 0.9-mile paved trail, birding, and ADA-accessible fishing docks. If golf is your thing, the town has two 18-hole options. Warrenton Golf Course, opened in 1971 and expanded in 1978, has Zoysia fairways, water hazards and plenty of doglegs — and it doesn't thread through a housing development, so it stays quiet. Country Lake Golf Club is the second option, with reviewers calling its prices fair.
Reifsnider State Forest, under 10 miles away, adds 1,389 acres to the mix. Hike the 1.3-mile Lizard Rock Trail past an intermittent creek, fish the ponds for black bass, catfish and sunfish, or hunt deer and turkey in season. For something bigger, Katy Trail State Park — the longest developed rail-trail in the US — has a trailhead at Dutzow, about 30 minutes south, good for hiking and biking along the Missouri River.
When the weather turns, the Warren County Historical Society covers the indoor hours. Founded in 1970, it documents the county's settlement, German heritage and growth through rotating seasonal exhibits plus permanent displays on Daniel Boone's local ties, Revolutionary War General Joseph Warren, historic ferries and communication methods, and a People Wall honoring local figures. Five minutes' walk away is the Schowengerdt House, an 1866 Victorian home on the National Register of Historic Places built for Ernst and Elesebet Schowengerdt. You can self-guide both sites during opening hours; guided tours need booking ahead.
The real draw for travellers is the location. Hermann, one of Missouri's best-known wine towns, is 30 minutes away, and Augusta is 40 — close enough for a tasting afternoon without paying wine-country lodging prices. Warrenton itself keeps things simple with familiar hotel chains: Super 8 by Wyndham, Hampton Inn by Hilton and Holiday Inn Express. Add Warrenton Pool Park for a swim and you've got a genuinely easy weekend that mixes small-town Missouri with vineyards and rail-trail miles.
