Anyone who has spent eight hours in an economy seat with an underwire digging into their ribs knows that travel-day underwear is not a trivial decision. The team at Condé Nast Traveller UK put a long list of soft, mostly wire-free bras through multi-day testing with women of different cup sizes and ages, judging each on the trio of support, style and comfort. The good news: none of the winners are frumpy.

Their overall favourite is Nudea's Stretch Scoop Bralette, a recycled-fabric style (86 percent recycled polyamide, or organic cotton) with multi-way straps that stay supportive even on larger busts. It comes with a free laundry bag, handy for hotel washes, and the neutral shades work invisibly under a white shirt or dress.

Different needs get their own pick. Stripe & Stare's Smooth Sculpt Padded Bra earned the top spot for fuller busts, thanks to a thicker underband and a smoothing finish under t-shirts, while the barely-there triangle style gives a bra-free feel for smaller frames. French label Ysé Paris — founded in 2021 and now B Corp certified — makes a pull-on ribbed microfibre triangle bra with no rigid fastenings at all, which is exactly what you want against an aeroplane seatback.

Budget-conscious packers are pointed towards Lemonade Dolls, whose lace and smooth bralettes go up to an H cup on 30–44 bands, with a high-support wire-free range for larger breasts. Part of the range uses 95 percent biodegradable fibres, and the brand donates underwear and funds to women in refugee centres across Europe.

For hot-weather holidays, Heist's Softskin Bandeau was the standout: aloe vera finished, strapless and so soft it's practically braless — though testers are upfront that it offers little actual support. On the sportier side, Copenhagen's Organic Basics does pillowy organic-cotton bralettes made entirely from recycled, recyclable or plant-based materials.

A few others worth knowing about. Lounge's spacer-fabric cups use 3D-knitted air pockets instead of dense foam, so they're light, breathable and won't get crushed in a carry-on, with a padded closure so nothing digs in when you lean back. Triumph's Body Make-Up Soft Touch gives t-shirt-bra shape without the wire. Kim Kardashian's Skims Fits Everybody line now spans nine shapes, with the editors backing the t-shirt bra for flights. And Understatement does the pretty details properly: silicone labels instead of itchy tags, and satin-covered elastic bands.

Why does this matter for a holiday? A bad bra can ruin a long flight, a hiking day or a beach dinner, and the fix costs roughly the same as a regular bra. The practical takeaways for packing: go wire-free, favour seamless or spacer fabrics that survive being squashed in a suitcase, pick neutral colours that disappear under light holiday clothing, and if you're heading somewhere hot, a soft bandeau doubles for strapless outfits. Testers came away convinced that once you switch, underwired bras lose their place in the suitcase for good.
