Puerto Rico's main gateway is picking up speed again. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan moved 897,121 passengers in October, up 4.8 percent on the same month last year — a sharper rise than September's 3.1 percent, and the second consecutive month of growth for the island's busiest airport.
The engine behind the rebound is domestic traffic, meaning routes connecting Puerto Rico with the mainland United States. That segment carried 774,301 passengers in October, up 6.2 percent year on year. International traffic went the other way, slipping 3 percent to 122,820 passengers, but the domestic surge was more than enough to push the overall total up by roughly 41,000 travellers compared with October 2025.
The bigger picture still shows work to do. Through the first ten months of the year, San Juan handled 11,129,777 passengers, down 2.4 percent on the same stretch of 2025. Yet the gap is closing: after September the annual deficit stood at 2.9 percent, and two solid months of growth have narrowed it. The figures come from airport operator ASUR and count all passengers moving through the terminal — arrivals, departures, residents, business travellers and people visiting family — so they're not a pure measure of holiday arrivals.
Why does this matter beyond Puerto Rico? Because the island is one of the Caribbean's key entry points, and the growth is coming exactly from where the region's tourism depends on it: the US market. As the Caribbean heads into its busiest winter season, a second month of rising US-bound traffic through San Juan is one of the clearer demand signals anyone watching the region has had lately. It doesn't guarantee a regional recovery — one airport is not the whole Caribbean — but it's a trend worth checking again when November's numbers land.
For travellers, there's a practical read too. Airlines add capacity where demand grows, and Puerto Rico's domestic routes are clearly filling up. If you're eyeing a winter sun escape, booking San Juan flights earlier rather than later looks like the smarter play this year.
