Capital One's Venture Rewards card is a popular pick for travellers who want simple rewards without a big annual fee — $95 a year gets you a flat 2 miles per dollar on everyday spending and 5 miles per dollar on hotels, rental cars and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel. But before you apply for the current welcome offer, it's worth making sure you actually qualify for it, because Capital One's approval and bonus rules are stricter than they look.

The current deal: 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in your first three months, plus a $300 credit toward hotels and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel in your first cardholder year. The Points Guy values that package at $1,688 in total.

Three rules can trip you up. First, Capital One generally won't approve you for more than one card application every six months, so a recent approval for any Capital One card means waiting. Second, the 48-month bonus rule: if you've received the Venture Rewards welcome bonus before, you need to wait 48 months from when the bonus posted — not from when you were approved. Third, and less obvious, the rule applies across the Venture family when you move down in annual fees. If you've taken the bonus on the premium Venture X ($395 annual fee) in the past 48 months, you're out of luck for the Venture Rewards bonus. But the reverse doesn't apply: a bonus on the no-fee VentureOne doesn't block you, because you'd be stepping up the fee ladder.

On credit scores, Capital One officially wants excellent credit, but The Points Guy suggests 670 as a realistic minimum and notes plenty of approvals below that line. If your score is very low or nonexistent, a credit-building card is a better starting point.

As for the miles themselves, you have two main routes. Redeeming them at a flat 1 cent each against any travel purchase on your statement — flights, rental cars, parking, rideshares — is the easy option. Transferring them instead to one of Capital One's 15-plus airline and hotel partners, mostly at a 1:1 ratio, can stretch their value further; programs like Air Canada Aeroplan and Air France-KLM Flying Blue are frequent favourites for getting outsized redemptions.

The card also carries a handful of perks that matter on the road: no foreign transaction fees, a rental car collision damage waiver, travel accident insurance, and up to $120 back on the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Who's this for? Travellers who don't want to juggle rotating bonus categories and just want a decent flat earn rate on everything, without paying premium-card prices. If that sounds like you, run through the checklist first: no Venture Rewards or Venture X bonus in the last 48 months, no Capital One approval in the past six months, and a credit score around 670 or higher. Clear all three and your application odds look good.
