Sanación y Vida S.A.S. started as one psychologist's side project in Huila, southern Colombia, and has grown into a 14-person wellness company that blends spa treatments with genuine medical care. Founder Luz Elena Narvaez Cardenas, 44, spent over 14 years guiding people through wellness processes before formalising the business, and her path offers an interesting window into a region travellers rarely hear about.

What makes the concept unusual is the mix on offer. Narvaez trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine before psychology, so the company treats health as body, mind and emotions working together. Clients can book massages, facials and yoga alongside consultations with internal and functional medicine doctors, the latter focusing on root causes rather than symptoms. Dermatology services are approved by health authorities too.

The client list is telling. Sanación y Vida holds contracts with Huila's Chamber of Commerce, the regional government and private firms, and it now sells corporate wellness programmes designed to support employee health and productivity. Memberships are in development. Longer term, Narvaez wants branches elsewhere in Colombia, partnerships with hotels, and eventually operations abroad — all signs that structured wellness retreats could become part of Huila's offer.

The backstory is as much about grit as treatments. Narvaez funded the company herself, reinvested every peso, and at low points pledged nearly all her personal assets to keep it afloat. Business skills came later, through Chamber of Commerce courses and programmes like MEGA and Innovación. When her original partners left, her daughters stepped in as co-owners, running marketing, customer service and care protocols — making this a genuinely family-run operation.

For travellers, why care? Huila is best known for San Agustín's archaeological park and the Tatacoa Desert, but a locally rooted wellness centre here points to a different kind of trip: combining desert stargazing and ancient statues with massages, yoga and functional medicine consultations at local prices. It's also a reminder that Colombia's wellness scene extends well beyond the Caribbean coast — and that businesses like this one are actively courting corporate and membership clients, which usually means more polished visitor experiences are on the way.
