If the grey British winter gets to you by January, the good news is that a proper dose of sunshine is rarely more than a three-hour flight away. Southern Europe has a handful of cities where winter days are genuinely bright — not beach-swim warm, but sunny enough for long lunches outside and sightseeing without a coat.

Spain dominates the list. Seville, Malaga and Alicante all rack up well over 290 sunny days a year, and their winters are mild: December highs in Malaga hover around 17-18°C, while Seville, slightly inland, can crack 20°C on a good January afternoon. Alicante's palm-lined seafront and shellfish-heavy tapas bars are far more pleasant in February than in August, and hotel prices drop sharply outside Spanish school holidays.

Malta and Cyprus push the sunshine east and south. Valletta gets around 5-6 hours of sun a day even in midwinter, and temperatures sit in the mid-to-high teens — enough for walking the city's baroque streets and taking the ferry across to the Three Cities. Limassol and Paphos in Cyprus are similar, with the bonus that you can pair a coastal stroll with a morning drive up to the Troodos Mountains for snow.

Further east, Athens is an underrated winter pick: crisp, clear days against the Acropolis, crowd-free museums and tavernas where locals, not tourists, fill the tables. And in Portugal, Faro and the wider Algarve stay bright through the colder months — think 15-16°C afternoons, empty cliff-top trails around Benagil, and golf greens at a fraction of summer rates.

The practical upside is cost and ease. Winter is low season across all of these cities, so flights from the UK often start under £60 return if you're flexible on dates, and central hotels in Seville or Athens can be half their summer price. You're also seeing these places as they actually are, rather than the peak-season versions designed for crowds.

Who is this for? Anyone craving daylight between November and March — city-breakers who want terraces and light rather than sunbathing, remote workers testing the winter-sun lifestyle, and couples after a cheap, warm-ish escape without a long-haul flight. Pack layers, since evenings do cool off, and remember many restaurants and attractions run shorter winter hours.
